THE LAND AND CLIMATE

Rich Soils and Favourable Growing Conditions Create a Prime Agriculture Environment

The Yellowhead falls within the Chernozem soil zone of Saskatchewan's Aspen Parkland. This fertile, loamy, thick black soil can be 15 centimeters (6 inches) in depth or more, creating a robust, solid foundation for agricultural production and crops, such as:

Cereal crops
- Wheat
- Oats
- Rye
- Barley

Pulse crops and oil seed
- Canola
- Flax

In addition, the area grows specialty crops and abundant forage crops to support a significant livestock industry.

An Ideal Climate
Soils alone do not guarantee agricultural productivity. Climate is the other vital factor. The Yellowhead is located within the continental climate zone and enjoys warm summers and cold winters with average July temperatures of 18 C falling to -19 C in January. Nearby Yorkton records a yearly average precipitation of over 350 millimeters, combined with mean July daytime temperatures of 24 C, over 110 frost-free days and 2,300 annual hours of sunshine in Canada's sunniest province.
