RURAL MUNICIPALITIES

The region's five rural municipalities occupy 4,176 square kilometers, equivalent to a square almost 65 kilometres per side. The land use and economy are heavily focused on agriculture with over 93 percent of the land occupied by farms. Most rural municipalities are also home to a few business enterprises.

Rural Municipality of Churchbridge  #211 (Population 679)

The Rural Municipality of Churchbridge is located in the northeast sector of the Region along the Manitoba border. It's the second largest rural municipality in the region with an area of 963 square kilometers. More than 190 farms occupy 90,600 hectares (94.3 percent of RM area). Highways 16 and 80 cross and the town of Churchbridge is located in the region.

Rural Municipality of Fertile Belt  #183   (Population 771)
The Rural Municipality of Fertile Belt in the southwest sector of the region is Yellowhead's largest rural municipality with 1,020 square kilometers of which 85,072 hectares (82.9 percent of total land area) is occupied by close to 200 farms. Esterhazy, the region's largest town and the Mosaic potash mine, the world's largest, are also located in the region. Highway's 80 and 9 are the area's major transportation arteries. The scenic Qu'Appelle River valley forms the southern boundary.

Rural Municipality of Langenburg  #181   (Population 558)
Agriculture and the Mosaic potash mines are a major industry of the Rural Municipality. The Carlton Trail Regional Park is located within its borders as well
as the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association,
which provides stewardship of the trail.

Rural Municipality of Saltcoats  #213  (Population 746)
The Rural Municipality of Saltcoats in the northeast sector of the region has a land base of 837 square kilometers, of which close to 220 farms occupy 81,400 hectares (97.2 percent of the total land area). The towns of Saltcoats and Bredenbury are located in the region along Highway 16, which crosses the RM diagonally, with highway 15 being the area's other major transportation artery.

Rural Municipality of Spy Hill  #152   (Population 365)
The Rural Municipality of Spy Hill with an area of 680 square kilometers, is the Yellowhead's second most intensively used for agriculture with 120 farms occupying about 67,400 acres (99.4 percent of the land area). With an average size of 1,392 hectares, the RM's farms are by far the largest in the region, exceeding its nearest competitor by about 50 percent. Situated in the Yellowhead's southeast sector, the RM has the scenic Qu'Appelle River valley as its southern boundary. Highways 22 and 8 are the regions main transportation routes. The villages of Gerald and Spy Hill are located in the RM.
